American drama in which a young woman must balance her life at a predominantly white prep school while staying true to her roots in a predominantly black neighbourhood. As she blends in with the other students at school and still manages to maintain friendships within her community, Starr (Amandla Stenberg) begins to feel the pressures of racial divide. One night, while out driving with her best friend, Khalil (Algee Smith), her life drastically changes when a police officer shoots and kills Khalil. Torn apart by grief, Starr immediately seeks retribution and to shine a spotlight upon racial injustices in America. Soon, her community rallies to support her and Starr leads a campaign to have her voice heard and represent her late friend, Khalil
