Self made

Wearing, Gillian, 1963-

Self Made is the debut documentary feature from Turner Prize winning artist Gillian Wearing, who placed an advert asking the public: “Would you like to be in a film? You can play yourself or a fictional character. Call Gillian.” Of the hundreds of people who replied, seven successful applicants were cast, undertaking a method acting workshop to delve into their own memories, fears and fantasies. Wearing makes the provocation that in a world where CCTV, reality television and “fictionalised” documentary make us all into performers, reality and fiction are interchangeable commodities. Are we all playing a role, consciously or unconsciously?
