Construction of the lighthouse to Columbus began in 1986 for the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Americas by Europeans. It was built to plans drawn by Scottish architect J. L. Gleave in 1931, and was inaugurated in 1992. It features projecting beams of light that form a cross shape, which can be seen from neighboring Puerto Rico
